It is made of stainless steel, does it take up space? is it compact?

Only a few bits are stainless steel: the band around the carafe, the steam arm and the two thin decorative pieces on the top and front of the machine. My machine came without its filter cup, but I expect that will be stainless steel. The tank and filter holder are cast aluminum and the bulk of the machine is plastic.

Sure, it can make smooth foam:
